The layers of information in urban spaces are fundamental to the work of Mark Matthes.
He expands the medium painting by using transparent glass as an image-carrier, which he incorporates into a collage of everyday materials and found objects. As a reaction to the function, history, and nature of the selected materials he applies layers of images and abstract signs, which superimpose each other to multi-perspective city-portraits. They remain half painting half object.
